Aussie YA Challenge 2011

So remember when I said I was going to do fewer challenges this year?  Clearly that is not true anymore! :)  I love challenges and can’t help but join, especially when it already fits well with my other reading plans for the year.

The 2011 Aussie Challenge is hosted by Irresistible Reads.   As an international participant, I am committing to reading 6 YA books by Australian authors, but will probably end up reading more.

Books Read:

  1. Will by Maria Boyd
  2. Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta
  3. The Ghosts of Ashbury High by Jaclyn Moriarty
  4. Pink by Lili Wilkinson
  5. The Piper’s Son by Melina Marchetta
  6. Beatle Meets Destiny by Gabrielle Williams
  7. Saltwater Moons by Julie Gittus
  8. Graffiti Moon by Cath Crowley
  9. Good Oil by Laura Buzo
  10. Finnikin of the Rock by Melina Marchetta
  11. Fury by Shirley Marr

These are books I already own and will aim to read this year.  I am not committing to all of them, but as many as possible!

  1. Looking for Alibrandi by Melina Marchetta
  2. I Am The Messenger by Markus Zusak
  3. Getting the Girl by Markus Zusak
  4. A Little Wanting Song by Cath Crowley
  5. John Belushi is Dead by Kathy Charles
  6. Liar by Justine Larbalestier
  7. The Year Nick McGowan Came to Stay by Rebecca Sparrow
  8. Raw Blue by Kirsty Eagar
  9. Six Impossible Things by Fiona Wood

When I joined this challenge, I went through other participants’ lists to find other ideas I might want to read and I do have to say that is really frustrating that lots of Aussie books are hard to acquire in the US.  Amazon doesn’t have them at all.  Book Depository has a lot of the books listed, but they are out of stock.   I guess that’s a sign I don’t need to purchase more books!

Weekly Recap 1/2/11

I hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!  I can’t believe it is already 2011, but I am excited for what this year will bring.  I forgot to post last week… I guess I was too busy watching Veronica Mars on Netflix.  lol

Books Read:

The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo – I loved this!  It was definitely a kids book, but it had a lot of depth to it.  It was a great story of love, hope, and forgiveness.  The characters were really well imagined and each one’s story was really interesting.  I loved that there was a good amount of action and things kept moving forward.  Definitely worthy of the Newbery Medal.

Monster High by Lisi Harrison – This was okay.  Parts were really creative, but I was kind of turned off by the brand name dropping and mean girl-ness.  I liked Frankie and her spunk.  I’ll probably read the next book in the series.

Poison Study (Study, Bk 1) by Maria V. Snyder – This was fantastic!  I’ve heard good things about Maria V. Snyder, but this is the first book of hers I’ve read.  I really liked Yelena and Valek and can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Black Hole Sun by David Macinnis Gill – This was good.  It started out a bit slow, but I liked the end.  I liked Durango, Vienne, and Mimi.  The miners were interesting, but I would have liked to have gotten to know the rest of the davo better and some of the characters (like Jean-Paul) seemed pointless. (Science Fiction)

Sister Wives by Shelley Hrdlitschka – This book was really interesting.  It’s about young girls being forced into plural marriage, so it’s hard to say that I liked the book.  It was interesting to see the three girls’ perspectives on everything going on around them. (Family Conflict)

British Books Challenge 2011

After a big 2010 YA Reading Challenge, I told myself that I was going to do something much smaller for 2011 and concentrate more on just reading the books I own.  But today I came across this and I can’t pass it up!  I love all (well most) things British and love reading books by UK Authors.

I linked to it above, but you can read more about the challenge here on the hostess’ (The Bookette) blog.  For international folks, there are two options – Winston Churchill (6 books) and the Royal Family (12 books).  At this point, I am only committing to Winston Churchill, but after making a list of the books I own that work for the challenge, I will probably end up as part of the Royal Family!

Books Read:

  1. Trash by Andy Mulligan (1/11/11)
  2. Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison (1/21/11)
  3. Entangled by Cat Clarke (2/2/11)
  4. Pretty Bad Things by C.J. Skuse (5/7/11)
  5. Rockoholic by C.J. Skuse (6/9/11)
  6. 0.4 by Mike Lancaster (10/16/11)
  7. The Lord of the Flies by William Golding (11/27/11)

I am not committing to reading all of these, but here’s what I own right now:

  1. Skins by Ali Cronin
  2. Split by a Kiss by Luisa Plaja
  3. My Invisible Boyfriend by Susie Day
  4. Big Woo by Susie Day
  5. On The Bright Side, I’m Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God by Louise Rennison
  6. The Declaration by Gemma Malley
  7. When I Was Joe by Keren David
  8. Almost True by Keren David
  9. Charmed Life by Diana Wynne Jones
  10. The Lives of Christopher Chant by Diana Wynne Jones
  11. Fever Pitch by Nick Hornby
  12. Slam by Nick Hornby
  13. About a Boy by Nick Hornby
  14. How to Be Good by Nick Hornby
  15. Coraline by Neil Gaiman
  16. Looking for JJ by Anne Cassidy
  17. The Ask and The Answer by Patrick Ness
  18. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
  19. One Day by David Nicholls

Plus there are several books coming out in 2011 that I know I want to read, like Jessie Love NYC by Keris Stainton, so this list will grow and change.  I’m sure I also own books by UK Authors that I just don’t realize are from the UK.  Will be doing more research on that!

So I’ll be back in 2011 to update this post as I read the books!
