When It Happens by Susane Colasanti

Reminiscent of the movie Say Anything, a debut novel for all those searching for The One!

Sara and Tobey couldn’t be more different. She is focused on getting into her first-choice college; he wants to win Battle of the Bands. Sara’s other goal is to find true love, so when Dave, a popular jock, asks her out, shes thrilled. But then there’s Tobey. His amazing blue eyes and quirky wit always creep into her thoughts. It just so happens that one of Tobey’s goals is also to make Sara fall in love with him. Told in alternating points of view, Sara and Tobey’s real connection will have everyone rooting for them from the minute they meet!

I really wanted to like this book, but I just found it silly and predictable. There were good moments and funny moments. I liked Sara and Tobey, but they both had moments where they were a little annoying. I also am not a big believer in “love at first sight” or “soul mates” so I just didn’t buy that they just knew they were perfect for each other before they’d even had a real conversation and then when they got together, they were just magically perfect and have a connection, like every cheesy The Bachelor contestant. It seemed pretty unbelievable. Sara had “the perfect boyfriend” built up in her head and I get why Dave didn’t live up to that, but I never quite saw why Tobey did. I would have liked to get to know the secondary characters a little better too. We got glimpses of them, but I was interested in more than just them.
